Of course sir, you're absolutely correct. He was a great martial artist as testified by other great martial artists. My main concern about JKD is the focus has become what JKD is and isn't. It is a style. There are people who have been authorized by Bruce Lee to teach it in his name. The focus should be on training. Instead there are many proponents of JKD who are proficient at quoting Bruce Lee chapter and verse, but can't throw a straight punch.
Its actually interesting delving into the different philosophies of JKD because he's got a lot of stuff there that you just wont learn from any master. like emptying your thoughts of all forms and react naturally when your in combat. reading his books are like a zen like experience. you train your body as well as your mind to comprehend difficult things and then simplify them. one of my favourite quotes from him is "Before I studied the art, a punch to me was just a punch, a kick was just a kick. after i studied the art, a punch was no longer a punch, a kick was no longer a kick. now that I understand the art, a punch is just a punch, a kick is just a kick"
I'm not a Jeet Kune Do Practitioner. I'm currently training in the art of Wing Chun. Bruce Lee's first art is Wing Chun and some of JKD's moves are based on it. If there are JKD practitioner out there, we are brothers.

Sorry Mike Bruce wasnt a boxing champ in England. Bruce never lived in england
He went from Hong Kong to San Fran then to washington.
He had a million chances to compete here in the US but opted not to. Hmmm wonder why? it was his ego.
He was groomed as a actor since he was a child not a fighter. He even wrote himself a million dollar check to himself saying thats how much money he is going to make being a big time movie star. Not a fighter.
He was never a world class fighter. He was a demo guy.
He spent hours building new toys...why didnt he just spar alot then fight? becuiase it looks more impressive if I can hit a bag or "toy" and show prowess. Typical posturing
Just like most of his students today. Demo guys. Not one of his guys ever became world class fighters that he taught.
Its a typical scenario where kung fu practioners think they have the answer to the fight game. But if you look at the history of china they have never produced any champs. They want you to believe they have the answer far from it.
Look at PI they have since the beginning of time they have had real fighters. Just look at escrima. And look at the boxing in PI. History shows the truth not blown up BS to make a buck.
I could go on and on. There is a lot of snake oil being sold as legit art(s).
Just trying to save some people from wasting there time and $$$. Because I did and its not right that these Bruce Lee Experts are selling smoke and mirrors.
Dont look far...you have some of the best martial arts that the world has ever seen...and its right there in PI. And its your own...and its real
Thank you for that opinion sir but I was hoping that you could add to your argument on why JKD or bruce lee or kung fu arts is not "llegit" maybe from a scientific standpoint on how they perform their punches or something, So we can come up with the pros and cons of the art, Just so we could further analyze techniques from a common point of view that will not, as much as possible, cause others to react personally? Just a thought. By the way I do Agree that the Philippines does have a bunch of martial arts that kicks ass the problem is the lack of cultural Identity weve been having for the past hundred years that we are only beginning to rediscover what makes us Fiipino. (Perhaps that discussion is reserved for another thread.)
Anyway, Are you a Filipino based in the States?
Its simple.
If bruce was a Filipino it would have filipino roots
or if he was russian it would be russian roots.
But he was from Hong Kong so therefore it was chinese based. And on top of it he was as a child a opera performer. That has a bias towards the extravagant which most chinese arts are.
his focus was making money...not fighting.
He did demos to WOW people. He hit objects not people. He did this to sell himself. He didnt like living in HK. He knew that in order to get out and make $$$ he had to come up with a gimmick. From his days as a kid oprea star
He did without a doubt open eyes but did it with out any fighting.
Now look at wht the gracies did single handily. They have a Put up or shut up attitude. We know the history from them.
If you look at it from a pure stand point of combat...sorry bruce didnt cut it.
Helio single handily has changed the face of martial arts alot more then bruce ever did.
Look closley what did Bruce really contribute? Not fighting...but movies
He was using JKD to make himself look legit. But yet he didnt fight...Why?
Because he couldnt repeat what he could do with others
But BJJ can over and over again
I believe he didnt have the fundamentals down in striking where it could be repeated.
If he did then we would have a ton of JKD boys banging it out.
If you want real combat art...you have it in your backyard & frontyard
Then once you study FMA you will understand how powerful and the truth it really is
You dont need JKD or Jun Fan
There is nothing on earth that Im aware of that is a complete as FMA. It has it all.
How did it get there???? thru blood
NOT SPECULATION
Im not a filipino. Im a white guy from the USA. There is a ton of flim flam that goes on on martial arts these days. Especially here in the US. Dont buy it
You have all the ingredients right there.
I understand where your coming from...i did the same thing.
You may or may not end up in the same place. But understand that if the truth is what your after
You will notice that they will have a common thread of truth. Theres a beginning for you.
Here is a few basics to look for:
Every fight has 4 directions:
forward,backwards, right, left
weight distribution is key for power. Then the hips put it together.
in unarmed combat there are 4 ranges:
kicking
punching
knee/elbow
clinch
If they dont address these basic fundamentals...then its a lame duck
my 2 cents
very interesting point of view.
I hope other FMAers get to read/see this post.
we did search for his MA fight records but we couldn't find any.
the only informal fight we heard/read of was Bruce vs Trovador Ramos (founder of Tracma - we read about that fight in their cubao gym)
I don't really understand this. Martial arts may reflect culture, but they're essentially about movement. Anyone of any race can do any martial art and still pay the culture from which it came homage. Manny Pacquiao is Filipino, but his fighting roots are American. What about somebody like Jon Bluming, he's Dutch but no one (in their right mind) questions his interpretation of karate and judo.
Honestly, I'd rather not talk about Bruce Lee. As I said earlier, I think that too many JKD people spend too much time navel gazing on what Bruce Lee may have said. At the same time, I think that it's completely inaccurate to belittle JKD as it stands now. So you don't think that Eric Paulson was a good fighter? Considering that most JKD people don't specialize in combat sports, they've done remarkably well. JKD is first and foremost a method of self-defense. Dan Inosanto's JKD Concepts uses the sports paradigm to teach and develop the attributes necessary to become proficient at self defense. Combat sports are a means to that end, not the end in itself. So they do train in and compete in muay thai, savate, grappling, and weapons fighting. They do put on good demonstrations, but that isn't all that they do.
Secondly, just because someone isn't a world class fighter doesn't mean that what they teach isn't good. You don't have to be able to fight to teach someone how to fight. Teaching and fighting are two different skill sets.
if JKD works
then by default it would be in the ring
whats in the ring today?
