Default padded baston: training tool or pillow fighting?

does the use of the padded baston help you in preparing for a real baston fight? or does it promote pillow fighting (e.g. bad habits of trading shots or exposing hands and heads) that will be detrimental in the real world?

If you're referring to the competition padded stick... those things still hurt!

Since "baston" was mentioned, I would still even think of it as a training tool too. I believe that arnis is a blade art and the "baston" is a mere training tool of the blade just as a kendo stick is to the samurai sword.

actually the baston is a weapon in it's own right. you can do things with it you cannot do with an itak. it can be used for restraining a person (something the itak will fail miserably in). death by blunt force trauma is just as dead as death by getting stabbed. dead is dead.

I think its better to train with a padded stick and little armour and light headgear, than it is to train with a real stick and total body armour and heavy headgear. At least you can move to avoid getting hit, and you will feel the impact as opposed to wearing all of that armour. Ironically, I've found that since the padded sticks tend to bend a lot, you have to swing faster and harder to make good contact and this improves the striking mechanics of most players.

each one has their own pros and cons. you can learn from each one. so from the original question, i would say that it is still a training tool.

we can't practice with real stuff in full force that is why we padded equipment. we train to be alive, not to be dead, right?

they say that there are different levels of "play" in FMA and on the end side of it is the Real Stuff.

i would say, it is effective enough. you will definitely acknowledge a hit from a padded stick because as i said earlier, it hurts. i don't have anything against the padded stick as a training tool or as a competition weapon, my qualms are with the rules and point system.

another thing I like in training in padded sticks is you can go full speed and full force without worrying about killing the other person, you can recognize your mistakes when you get hit without serious injury. However I do have padded sticks loaded with 1/2 inch BAHI inside for those special people that cheat or is just plain rude and arrogant hehehe
