    Default Handguns

    Hi guys,

I know next to nothing about guns. What would be a good gun for home defense? A shotgun? What kind? What would be a good handgun, once the election gun ban is over, for personal protection? Caliber? Brand? What are your personal favourites?

    for home defense?

in the philippines we have a bias towards the .45 1911 model. the rounds are readily available and relatively cheap. the local .45 model1911 is called rock island armory (locally sold as armscor) has a niche following abroad as the best value for money 1911 .45.

the "new" guns in the market usually are of the 9mm or the .40s&w. autos. they offer good clip volume ranging from 12-18 rounds per. the 9mm is not as cheap as the .45 but it is readily available as it is the official caliber of the a.f.p. and the p.n.p. the 40s&w is gaining popularity but it's still pretty expensive. good 2nd hand pistols would be the hk usp, glock 19, and the styer.

there used to be a pistol that was locally made called the viper. it carried a 9 round 38 super clip. nice and cheap.

for shotguns, get a nice pump action that has at least a 5 round tube. armscor is good and cheap. you could get a nice mustang or hk/ fabarm or a beretta but if you're keeping it for home defense, a good ol 12 gauge pump action gun will serve you well.

p.s. for home defense i would go for a 12 gauge with an 8 round tube (modified). pump is more rugged but an auto is ok. nothing scares the living sh!t out of anyone as the sound of "katchak!!!" of a pump action cocking.

p.s. also, get a dog. guns are useless unless you could get some early warning that you'll need them. a dog will be both the primary defense line and serve as an early warning.

For the shotgun, what kind of shot would your recommend? I recall people mentioning birdshot or even salt. Buckshot? Slug? I'm concerned it would go through the walls.

for home defense you can get birdshot. if you know someone who has access to security contractors, try ordering the rubber balls. less than lethal but enough.

for self-defence in our house in the province, we have a pre-war stevens ss di-bali sawed off 12ga shotgun. it's very reliable. easy to operate. jam/weather -proof. used to guard farm/palay fields.

here at home, .38revolver. simple to operate/maintain. jam proof.
( simple to operate alarm system = 1 extremely noisy fox terrier)

    .38 special? tikpal?

the old stevens were good guns. i wouldn't saw them off though. there's a system now that you could choose between barrels. winchester. between duck and rabbit. rabbit is good for guard duties.

    nice alarm system.

or those non-lethal bean bags. preferred by my friends from LAPD.

they were selling some bean bag rounds at the gunshow before bro : )

Also there's a gun sale going on at P.B. Dionsio, I think their pump action Akkar shotgun is only 16,000 with papers already, i think they have some handguns on sale also. reply here if you guys are interested il can give you the person to contact.

For home defense, buckshot is a great choice, single slugs not so good inside homes cuz it goes thru most stuff : )

For handguns, kung pang home defense lang a revolver would be ideal because its easy to use, easy to clean and easy to teach to family members. no need to be proficient in clearing your semi auto handgun if it jams, misfires etc

also you should get an improvise dry box for your ammo if you plan to store them for long periods of time, oxidation plays havoc with your ammo and they can be unreliable.

    just my 2 cents : )

I dont have guns in the house today, but I grew up in rural Texas were we mounted guns on a rack in our pickup trucks and shooting was a skill all kids learned by 8 years old.

Shotguns are the best home defense for most people. Small buckshot is best, birdshot is good as well. A pump shotgun is best, less likely to jam and the sound of chambering a round will make most intruders run for cover. Hand guns are too hard to use in close quarters, and take lots of practice to gain accuracy.

In America a gun in the home is 10 times more likely to kill a family member than an intruder. Something to remember.
