Default How to hold mitts/pads for kids

Hey guys, my older brother, cousin and I are going to be training our nephews in MMA. My cousin (formerly of Submission Sport) will be handling BJJ, my brother for boxing and me for wrestling and muay training. I'm really happy that my nephews are interested in continuing the legacy of martial arts our family has. My query is, how exactly do you hold mitts and pads for kids (we'll be training nine year olds)?

i hold them just the same, but a little bit lower. it's supposed to be proportional to the height of the student and also in consideration of the intent of the strike. usually, for kids in my class, i go for softer mitts and make sure they are padded enough, i.e. wraps, gloves, protection pads, etc.

Nice! Thanks, man. A cousin and I decided to train our nephew in MMA (He'll handle the grappling, I'll handle the striking). I just hope the kid can keep being interested.

goodluck with your plans... usually, the interest should come from the kid so he won't feel that he's being forced to do such things. he would also learn faster din. but if he's realy into it, he'll stick.

also, try to encourage a few of his close buddies to train with him. it might help as well.

I'd advise you to squat rather than stoop down to avoid back ache but it depends how tall they are.

Another question. Since they're kids, should I buy boxing mitts (since they're little and all) or just use my trusty thai pads?

pare, depends on the kid's age, built, and experience. if he's just starting out, buy those big and foamy kick pads that look like swim floaters. dont use your trusty thai pads, they might be too stiff for the kid. punch mitts are ok too.

important thing to remember is that the kids ONLY need to know the skills first. there are a lot of areas you can develop first, pick one - form, flexibility, precision, speed, power, timing, etc...
