dunno if yvel was using a steel one but most likely he was, imagine if he used a plastic one.

another incident in PRIDE was Gary Goodridge getting hit on the groin and it broke his plastic groin cup

kung sa bjj or wrestling mo lng gagamitin. pwde na yung mga carbon fiber.. pero sa muay thai. i prefer the steel cup.. medyo mahal nga lang sya at uncomfortable sa una. pero sa tagal eh masasanay ka na rin na suot mo yun. this is a very good way to protect your. groin from those nasty inside leg kicks that includes a hit on you balls.. may advantage din nga pla yung steel cup sa bjj. kasi pag nag aarm bar ako. dun ko nilalagay yun arm sa may groin guard. kaya kahit hindi ko pa tinodo yung arm bar. eh masakit na agad!!! ( i know it's a dirty trick, but it is effective)

Definitely steel for Muay Thai, check out the youtube of Wanderlei Silva kicking Gilbert Yvel on the balls if you can find it, Gilbert couldnt continue anymore after that kick
